Many of our modern pandemics underscore the link between humans and the environment. AIDS, Ebola, H1N1 (swine flu), SARS, and COVID-19 are illnesses first transmitted to the human population via interaction with animals. Zoonotic virus transmission itself is not a new phenomenon by any means, but industrialization, urbanization, globalization, and their associated economic, cultural, and demographic changes create conditions for zoonotic illnesses to reach pandemic proportions. This session will explore how human caused environmental degradation increases the likelihood for viruses to crossover from non-human to human populations, and examine alternative ways of safely coexisting with non-human species.
